1950 Bentley MK VI DHC in Royal Blue £129,500
|1950 Bentley MK VI DHC. Finished in Royal Blue with Magnolia interior. We are delighted to offer this very beautiful elegant classic car. Coach built by E. D. Abbott Ltd, Farnham, Surrey, who only built 16 Bentley MK VI Drophead Coupe cars, of which 14 were built to an “unknown design number” and 2 DHC’s were built to Design No. 3768. In addition they built 2 MK VI Fixed Head Coupe cars. Having conducted research on Bentley MK VI DHC’s it appears there are only 6 DHC’s known to be on the road today.
Delivered to its first owner, Mr S. L. Fellows, on 31st May 1950, the car was then sold to Mr W. Meyer in July 1951 and remained in his ownership until 1980 when it was purchased by Mr J. M. Donner. At that time the colour of the car was black with blue upholstery and carpets. In 1981 Mr Donner had carried out a major restoration which included changing the external colour to blue, which is the same paintwork on the car today. Internally the car was re-upholstered in its present Cream leather and carpeted in a Light Grey. Unfortunately the mohair roof was replaced with a white vinyl roof, completely out of place! In 1989 Mr Donner sold the car at Sotheby’s Auction to Eddie Shah. A copy of the auction catalogue is available with the history. Eddie Shah registered the car to his company, Messenger Group, Newspaper House Warrington, WA1 1NH. It was then sold on 3rd September 1990 to Peter J Allmand Smith, who put the car in his private collection of classic and vintage cars, that was an air-conditioned facility, where it remained for 20 years until December 2010, when the previous owner purchased it.
After acquiring the car in February 2011, the cross-ply tyres were replaced with Avon radials and a number of mechanical issues were attended to, including refurbishment of the front suspension. In May 2011 the vinyl roof was replaced with Dark Blue mohair including a mohair hood cover and tonneau cover. In November/December 2013, as a result of a broken No. 5 piston, the engine was completely stripped down and other components were also examined and replaced where necessary. There are invoices for £90,000 for works carried out in the last 10 years. This car drives superbly. In December 2015 all the interior carpet and leather trim, including the boot carpet, was replaced in Cream, which complements the Magnolia upholstery.
